Neo Futurist Manfiesto For Revolutionizing Literature
The fact that this manifesto is here, is itself part of this manifesto. This manifesto is Free. Free as in Speech and Free as in Beer. This manifesto is CC, because it embodies part of what makes CC great. This manifesto will be open to the public upon being written. Parts of this manifesto may be copied. Other parts may be spammed and destroyed, buried under a mountain of spam links. That is the nature of the written medium in which we live. Right now, today, always.
For too long, literature has been about passive interaction. We claim:
1. The reader shall no longer be shackled by its, her, his inability to edit the document read. Participation is the great liberation. 2. The writer shall no longer be shackled by its, her, his inability to interact with the reader except outside specific, neutered circumstances. Screw book signings. You should be able to sign a book with an RFID tag by swiping your phone over it. You should be able to do that online. But more, much more: you, the writer, should be able to break the glass wall your publishers and your editors and your publicitors build around your writing, and feel the readers. feel that living, bulbous, sometimes ugly mass of people who have their own ideas about your ideas. Where there is silence, there should be sound. Where there is blindness, sight. Where there is blandness, taste. 3. The medium of storytelling should no longer be shackled by the line. The line has one dimension. Should we go to the circle, with two dimensions? No. The cube, with three? No! The hypercube, with four? NO! We embrace the graph, a structure of infinite dimension! We embrace the fractal, a structure with non-integral dimension! Storytelling should branch and re-branch and collide and wrap upon itself in a self-similar way that dazzles the human mind and leaves it broken, shattered like exposure to one of Lovecraft's monsters. 4. A participant in dialogue of whatever form should no longer be shackled by their identity. Your identity is your own. On the internent, anyone can be a dog. Or an angel. Or anything, anyone. The freedom of identity should be embraced, not stuffed into a box of code or rule. 5. The writing market should not longer be shackled by rules that currently exist in it.
